20 years, 20 lessons
A journey through practice
In 2003, Tim Bell and I had a tentative, stilted conversation in his kitchen. Shyly, coyly, tentatively, one of us (I forget who) posited that perhaps, maybe, we could go into practice together. In 2004 we entered a design competition, won it and Bell Phillips was born. Over two decades the practice has become a sector leader in council housing, community-led housing and regeneration projects with a strong social focus and an amazing team.
On 5th February I’ll be dissecting those 20 years in practice; retracing our journey, reflecting on the challenges we faced, the pitfalls we avoided (or not), how the studio evolved and the lessons learned along the way.
