Ealing Passivhaus
It is reported that Ealing Council are set to demolish 53 unfinished Passivhaus council homes. The homes, designed by my former practice, Bell Phillips, have been left unfinished since the contractor went into administration in 2023.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again and I’ll keep saying it even if no-one is listening.
Unless we change the culture of the construction industry from being PRICE-led to VALUE-led, things like this will keep happening.
Money is tight and it’s hard, but this is a false economy mentality.
Quite rightly there is a lot of focus on the number of buildings we demolish. Phineas Harper was making this point to MPs just last week. At least most of the buildings we demolish have given some use. Demolishing buildings before they’ve even been completed really is a new low.
The amount of money, carbon, time and resource wasted. It’s mind-bending.
